His Masterpiece

For most of us, my self included, thinking of ourselves as a masterpiece is somewhat outside of our realm of imagine! I tend towards thinking that I need to change this, or do that, or what will others think. But then, I will see a reminder of what my Father thinks of me. He says that I am his masterpiece.

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)

The word masterpiece in Greek is poiema. The first time I read this was in another devotional/blog that I read. I do not remember whose it was but I do know that this use of the word has made me think differently about myself. It is the greek word behind the word poem, or poetry. I love poetry, and love singing because the songs are so like poems. And my favourite book in the bible is Psalms, a book full of songs!

There are a lot of days where I wake up, in the middle of the night, and in the mornings, with a song playing in my head, over and over. Then I read a verse, in a book of the bible that I usually don’t go to, Zephaniah. From chapter 3, verse 17. (My favourite version for this is Young’s Literal Translation).

“Jehovah thy God in thy midst, A mighty one doth save, He rejoiceth over thee with joy, He doth work in His love, He joyeth over thee with singing.”

So, I think my father is talking to me, His poiema, His masterpiece, creating joy over me with singing. This is one of my treasures found in the bible, one of His promises to all of us. What a way to start the day.
