God’s Surprises, Big and Little

When I moved to Canada, there was one thing I wanted to see. A moose! I have seen deer, elk, bears, antelope, lots of animals in the wild, but had never seen a moose. I knew Canada was known for having moose.

One day, before we moved to Ontario, we thought we would take drive up to Schubenacadie Wildlife Park and see theirs. At least it would be a moose, even if not in the wild. Moose live in Nova Scotia, but if you are in a city you will not see one, so we figured the park would be a good place to go.

Well, we got there, and as we were paying the tickets, the attendant told us that she was sorry but the moose had died the day before so don’t keep looking in that area as there were no more.

WHAT?? So I still would not see a moose.

Fast forward a few years, and we now live in Ontario. And I had still not seen a moose.

We went on a vacation in 2015 to visit David’s parents, and see a few things even he had not seen. He wanted to see the Cabot Trail, I wanted to see a moose. Crazy, right!

Now the people at the hotel told us that the best place to see moose is on the Cabot Trail, and we were headed around the trail that day. It was a little overcast but not rainy or misty at all, so we took a lunch and headed out. We were circling the trail in one direction so we would see everything; all the viewing areas, historical markers, and hopefully moose, lol.

We drove through beautiful scenery, and saw many wonderful sites, but no moose. (At this time, silently, under my breath, I asked God, “Please may I see a moose. It is one of your creations, and I would love to see one) There was one area that everyone said you can see them.

But, as we walked around the pathway, we saw hoof prints but no animals at all. So by now I had given up. Here I was in the place where everyone sees moose and I saw nothing. We got in the car and kept on driving, headed around the trail and back to the hotel.

After about 10 minutes I realized that we were going back the way we had come, and for us to see the entire trail, we had to turn around. So, we turned around and headed back, again, in the right direction. I thought maybe we would stop again at the short trail that should have moose, and walk again to look.

Well, as we got closer, there were lots of cars stopped and the parking lot looked full, so no more walking for us… BUT, walking down the street, what did we see? A MOOSE, and not just any moose, but a mama and a baby! I was so excited I could hardly drive, and David wanted me to stop, but I had to at least get close enough to get a picture. And I did, not a great big one, but I did see a moose, and my first thought, after the surprise, was to thank God for bringing me to the right place.

If we had not gone the wrong way, and then turned around to go back in the right direction, we would have missed His surprise for me. And there were 2, not just one! I know everyone expects to see a moose, large antlers, standing up proud, but the moose God has for me were just “plain” ones, a mama and a baby. Nothing big or grand, but in my eyes, the most beautiful things around, because He had sent them to me, a surprise just for me! I know, there were others there, and they got to see them also, but isn’t that His way too? Sometimes what blesses us, blesses others as well.

But I know, He sent me to the right place, at the right time, even after I had given up. He cares about us all the time, with the big things, and even with the small things.

Someone asked a group of us if we believed that God cared about small things, as well as big things. Did He care about making up happy, giving us a present “just because” or was He only there for giving us what we need to live here on His earth. This is what I always tell people, this story, and the fact that I know He sometimes send us a present “just because” He loves us and wants to see us smile!!
