We recently adopted a new cat! We had 2, they were my wedding presents back in 2009, so they were very special. Jack was the older one by one month, he crossed the rainbow bridge in 2021, and Danny followed in 2023. They were both the most wonderful cats ever, and I have had a lot of cats in my life.

It took us some time to get over the initial time of missing them, but we did eventually realize that we wanted another small one to take care of. We had occasionally walked through the Humane Society here in town, looking around all the cats there, but none caught our attention. They were all cute, nice, friendly, and seemed like great pets. But, that is not exactly what we were looking for. We wanted to know that we were helping a cat that might now be the perfect one for most people.
We were looking for an older one that might not be adopted, that was not what most people would take home.
Well, along came Milly. She was brought in as a stray, and named by someone there “Morwen”, which is a name from Lord of the Rings. She was brought in to the shelter in mid March, and this was mid June when we were there. Three months she had been there.
We found out that she had been covered in matted hair, had to be shaved, sent to be spayed, got tons of shots (they come in a series), and put in the cages they use there.
So here she is, a stray that was used to being outside, and now is living in a small cage and has people around all day, along with the smells of so many other cats. All she wanted to do was hide in her cubby in side the cage. There was a couple of pictures online of her; one with the cone from the spaying and one where you can see a “sweater” where they shaved her.
So, we went in to look at her, because she had been there 3 months and without anyone even asking to meet her, she would not come out of her cubby for others to see what she looked like.
She came in the room, went to the corner and huddled there. David petted her, and she purred slightly, and even ate her treats off his fingers. All good signs. We talked it over and told them we would discuss it over night and call the next day.
Well, here was a cat no one wanted, had been through a lot in just a short time, and had not even had anyone interested enough to meet her. So with a name change, Morwen becomes Milly and has a new home.
She is not a senior cat, which is what we wanted, she is only 1 year 9 month old. She is not a cuddly cat, I have not even seen her, David has, as she runs to her hiding place. She comes out each night to eat, drink, use litter box, explore the room, and then hides again when we wake up. But we talk to her even when we can’t see her. She will know our voices and smells, and she will eventually come to see that we love her and take care of her. I don’t want to rush her, but I do wish she would understand this sooner than later, lol.
Do I run from my Father? I think I do, at times. Run and hide, run to my cubby, my “safe” place. That can be many places or things to different people. To some, drugs or alcohol, to others, food, even to others, over exercising, over spending. Anything that becomes addictive. Anything that we use to cover up what really bothers us.
But we forget that the Father already knows what we are going to do.
1 John 3:20b “God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.”
He has promised that no matter what that is, He will never leave us or stop loving us.
Hebrews 13:5b “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you”.
I know this and I know that I am His.
So one day Milly will come to understand that we love her, we will not take her back to the Humane Society, this is now her home.
One day you and I will be able to completely see ourselves as God sees us, His children, perfect in His sight, and we can live without the crutches of this world, whatever that may be.
